The Major Difference Between the Shia and the Sunni

There is no doubt that the Holy Quran is the book of Allah and that all Muslims of the world are required to accept its teachings and instructions. When one opens Quran and casts a glance at its verses he will come across to what seems to be a clear landscape of an extraordinary, sensational, and exciting future and the end of the universe.  Quran indicates that the ultimate mission of the Prophet of Islam was to make this religion prevail over all other religions in the world; and one day this holy aspiration will finally be fulfilled. Allah stated in Quran:  "It is He who has sent His messenger (Muhammad) with the guidance and the Religion of truth, to prevail over all religions, even though the idolaters may detest." (Quran 9:33)  The Holy book of the last Messenger of Allah gives the glad tidings that the rule over the earth shall finally belong ...

When God Enters Your Vocabulary
No fake tan? No Saturday nights out? Cover my hair? Are you crazy?! My Background A Friday afternoon at school full of excitement and chatter about what to do at the weekend, what clothes to wear, will I pass for 18 to get into the coolest club? My ambitions in this stage of my life were to a) have fun b) impress boys and c) to look gorgeous. But was I fulfilled? Did I respect myself? Moving on a stage to college, my new start to be confident and have lots of friends after all I was 16 now I wasn't a child! During this time my parents were happy with me, I was "growing up so fast" being the typical teenager. Amongst the many friends I had one stood out, someone who was different to the others and quickly became my best friend. The frequent bus journeys to and from college were made enjoyable by my new best friend we would share jokes and talk ...

The Quran’s message: Faith is not a force

Faith is NOT a force. Faith is a relationship word. It is dependence and reliance upon God. It is ultimately unconditional surrender to God. It is to trust Him, which includes believing Him. As you can see, faith is to govern our entire lives. We are to WALK BY FAITH. If faith were a force, then it is supposed that God would have faith. But once we see that faith is trust, reliance, and dependence, we see that God needs no faith. He hasn’t anyone to rely upon! Indeed, real faith is the result of seeing that we have no power, no merit, and nothing about ourselves which obligates God to do a thing for us. Faith is the trust and assurance that all of the promises of God find their YES IN HIM. Not in us. Not in our faith. And not because we said the right words. The Qur’an repeatedly attests to the fact that if it were God's Will He could have guided ever ...

Examine the importance of family life in islam

Examine the importance of family life in islam
Family is the nucleus of society and the first society in which we learn social etiquette principles and cooperation. Family is the center of protection of national and moral traditions and in one word, for the protection of individuals. Hence, those who are deprived of family blessings will be exposed to doom. The absence of moral values will be the loss of cooperation and co-existence and finally the decadence of nations and human societies.  Today, with a casual glance at the quality of life and disintegration of families and increasing rates of divorce and parents making great efforts to provide for the material needs of their children and disregarding moral and human values, we see that family life is on the decline.  Effective and social relations are waning and the relations of elders and the young generations are strained and there is littl ...

The Islamic View of Life

The Islamic View of Life
The Islamic religion is now a major factor in human life and its impact is felt not only in Arabia, where it started out and then spread to the four corners of the earth, embracing a significant portion of humanity, but also in Africa where it has in many cases displaced an indigenous belief system whose world view, though similar to Islam in certain respects, varies widely from it.  This section of the chapter deals with the Islamic world view. It does not only seek to elucidate the most salient and very important points about the Islamic faith, but it also wishes to provide the reader with background information so that he can, after having read the first part of this study, reach a better understanding of the difference between traditional African thought and orthodox Islamic thought. To sum up this discussion on the Islamic view of life, one can say ...

A Great Sin: Helping the Oppressors -2

A Great Sin: Helping the Oppressors -2
Imam Musa al-Kadhim (a.s.) commands Safwan Jamāl Safwan bin Mahram Kufi was a very pious companion of Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (a.s.) and Imam Musa al-Kadhim (a.s.). He used to earn his livelihood by hiring out camels. He owned a large number of camels. He says that one day Imam Musa al-Kadhim (a.s.) said to him, “Safwan every action of yours is meritorious except one.” “May I be sacrificed for you, what action is that?” He said, “You hire your camels to Harun al-Rashid (l.a.)” He said, “I don’t give my camels for hunting or games but he takes them when he goes for Hajj and I do not serve him myself, I order my servants to accompany them on the journey.” Imam (a.s.) asked, “Do they pay you in advance or after their return?” “After they return”, he replied, “Don’t you carry the hope that they return safe and sound from their journ ...

A Great Sin: Helping the Oppressors-1

A Great Sin: Helping the Oppressors-1
'Helping the oppressors’ is a great sin in Islam. Fazl Ibn Shazān has narrated from Imam Riďa (a.s.) that he said concerning the Greater Sins: “And helping the oppressors and bending (leaning) towards them.” In the narration of Amash from Imam Sadiq (a.s.) the following is mentioned, “Not helping the oppressed people is a Greater Sin.” In other words helping the oppressors is also a Greater Sin. Imam Musa Ibn Ja’far (a.s.) says: “To participate in the activities of the oppressors and to endeavour to achieve their evil objectives and to help them is equal to infidelity and to knowingly lean towards them is a Greater Sin and deserves Hell.” (Wasa’il ul-Shia) The Holy Prophet (S) similarly says: “On the night of ascension (Miraj), I saw the following inscription on the doors of Hell, ‘DO NOT BE A HELPER OF THE OPPRESSORS.’” (Wasa ...

Divine Judgment

 Divine Judgment
Introduction In the name of God, the Beneficent the Merciful, praise be to Allah the Lord of the worlds, peace and prayers be upon the most dignified of messengers, Muhammad and his purified household. The subject matter we would like to discuss here is of dire importance and graveness. We would not be exaggerating if we said that it is one of the most important matters since it touches our daily lives and relates to the core of our actions. It also constitutes a major part of the tests and trials/fetna of Allah (SWT) to us in this life, the result of which determines God’s pleasure or anger upon us. Our guidance or misguidance thereby depends on that which further determines our salvations from this lives and whether we achieve a safe and victorious exit to our hereafter, God-willing! It is not a simple and easy matter at all as these tests and tria ...
